Mother Shipton’s Cave & The Petrifying Well

This is England’s oldest visitor attraction – open since 1630. Millions of people coming to Knaresborough over the centuries have visited the legend of England’s most famous prophetess and the amazing Petrifying Well.The attraction includes the cave, a museum, the petrifying and wishing wells, picnic areas, playgrounds, woodland walks and a tea room and gift shops. A number of special events are held throughout the year – see the website for details.

It is believed that Mother Shipton foretold the Spanish Armada, Great Fire of London and cars, trains and even aircraft. Many have interpreted her announcement: “Around the world men’s thoughts will fly, Quick as the twinkling of an eye” as an anticipation of TV, telephones and the internet.
